"It’s time that we recognize one of the great challenges confronting our democracy: We are at an inflection point where facts may no longer continue to matter."

WHAT IS NEWS LITERACY?

News literacy is the ability to recognize the standards of fact-based news in order to trust, share, and act on accurate information. In a society where information spreads like wildfire, it is becoming more challenging than ever to separate fact from fiction. Particularly with the advancement of social media, anyone has the ability to create and share information, whether true or false. News literacy teaches about the importance of a free press in our democracy while also demonstrating how to decipher credible information to determine what is trustworthy.

WHY "THINK BEFORE YOU SHARE?"

Misinformation and the lack of news literacy has led to a crisis in our democracy. The ability to determine what is credible is essential to the development of a healthy, functioning society. Without the capacity to agree upon a set of basic facts, we are unable to make well-informed decisions about our lives and government.

Misinformation affects everything in our lives. However, with the vast amount of opportunities for misinformation to be posted, it is next to impossible to prevent this phenomenon from happening. That is why we challenge you to instead find ways to stop the spread. Building news literacy habits that fight misinformation allows us to stop and think about the information we are spreading.  Therefore, it is essential to create a movement within our communities that is dedicated to building news literacy habits to "Think Before You Share."
